Colosseum Floor - Our tour group was shown the floor of the Colosseum and it was a pretty impressive view. I can't imagine how imposing this place would be packed.

What was the reasoning behind the paid tour? Skipping the line? More historical info? Getting to stand on the private 'tours only' floor?

Did you get to go into the basement? Rumor has it that certain tours go underground.

Short answer is yes, to all of your questions. We wanted to maximize what we saw in the time we had. We are also notoriously bad for skipping audio tours or not taking other aid when we go to museums but felt that it would be worth it in Rome to make sure we got as much information as possible.

At the Colosseum we started off in the basement (didn't walk beyond the wooden platform above), then went to the floor level and then up to the third tier.

We looked at tours because we wanted to get to the Amalfi Coast area and wished to do it as a guided trip (from Rome or Naples). Then we booked a few more tours (Vatican/St Peter's Basilica and Colosseum) with the same company to maximize discounts that were offered.
